My name is Gary Phillips. I’m a PADI Platinum Course Director and the founder of No Limit Dive Center in Pattaya, with over 30 years of experience in professional diving and instructor development.

What an Internship Really Means in Professional Diving
Most people who reach this page are looking for a clearer understanding of what a PADI professional internship actually involves, beyond the marketing language that often surrounds professional courses. From my perspective as a long-time PADI Course Director, an internship is best explained honestly, from the working side of the industry rather than from a brochure.
At its core, a scuba internship represents the transition from recreational diving to professional responsibility. It is the stage where enthusiasm and personal skill are shaped into reliability, judgment, and confidence as a dive professional. Rather than learning in isolation, you develop through structured guidance, close mentorship, and continuous real-world exposure, all aimed at preparing you to lead, assist, and support other divers safely and professionally.
This stage allows you to experience real professional expectations before carrying responsibility on your own. You learn how decisions are made in real conditions, how to work with students and certified divers, and what consistency and teamwork look like in a functioning dive centre. These are skills that develop over time through experience, repetition, and close guidance—not in isolation.
What Is a PADI Course Director?
A Course Director is the highest level of instructor trainer within the PADI system. Course Directors are authorised to train and certify new PADI Instructors and to conduct Instructor Development Courses (IDCs) and Instructor Examinations preparation. Reaching this level requires decades of experience, an extensive teaching record, consistent instructor-level results, and selection through a highly competitive and limited process. In simple terms, a Course Director is responsible not just for teaching diving skills, but for shaping the standards, judgement, and professionalism of future instructors.
Training under a Course Director means learning from someone who operates at the top of the professional hierarchy, with a deep understanding of PADI standards, real-world teaching challenges, and the realities of working in the global dive industry. Rather than focusing only on passing exams, Course Directors mentor candidates to become confident educators and leaders—people who can teach safely, adapt to different students, and uphold professional standards anywhere in the world.
